A senior professor at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has lodged a complaint in Uttar Pradesh that his personal e-mail account was hacked, police said Wednesday. M.C Bansal, who teaches in department of paper technology at IIT Roorkee's campus in Saharanpur, met senior police officials Tuesday evening and lodged the complaint. 'The e-mail issued by the hacker, purportedly on behalf of the professor, requests receivers of the mail for financial assistance,' district police chief Amit Chandra told IANS over telephone. 'We have constituted teams to probe the case. We are also consulting IT experts to know from where the mail was sent after hacking the professor's e-mail account,' he added. According to police, the hacker claims the sender of the mail had to be hospitalised in Nigeria after he met with an accident. The mail requests receivers for financial assistance. Bansal came to know about the hacking only after his friends and relatives started calling him up Tuesday after reading the mail. 'I used to change the password of my account frequently. I am surprised and shocked by the incident. I am afraid of the misuse of my mail account,' Bansal told reporters in Saharanpur.

Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal has come up with a innovative idea to reform school education system and is planning to scrap the Class 10 board examination.
Sibal is of the opinion that examination-based system causes trauma
to both the parents and the students. He also felt that the time had
come to restructure the system and make it less strssful for the
students.
Sibal said that since the student continued in the same school even after Class 10, board exams were not required.
The Union HRD Ministry will consult and take into confidence the state education boards before taking a final decision.
Sibal also said it this ministry will do its best to implement the Yash Pal Committee report within 100 days.

Quantity vs Quality
I think most of us are well aware of the fact that quantity
always inversely proportional to quality. Now you are thinking why I m writhing
this actually I just to express my view about the continuously increasing
number of seat in IIT’s. And opening of new IIT’s.
If we look into
4year earlier JEE exam i.e. JEE-2005 then there are around 3500 seats in 7
IIT’s and JEE merit will be till AIR 5000 and if you look into JEE-2009 there
are around 7000 seats in 15 IIT’s and JEE has given merit up to AIR 10035 for
admission to 15 IIT’s IT-BHU and ISM-Dhanbad, and JEE has also given extended
merit list of around EML 43000 student. Those student listed in extended merit
list will be eligible for admission to IISER, IIST’s, and some other college
(complete list can be found at JEE-2009).
The increasing No. of seats in IIT’s reservation for 27% OBC
category will increase the No. of seats up to 54% of the seats available in
2007. So it obvious that quality of education in IIT’s is decreasing. Everyone
know that by just opening new IIT’s can’t give the IIT quality education it
will just reduce the IIT brand value.

I am sure most of you all know that the JEE results were declared on 25-May-2009.
Recently the IITs have been declaring results in 2 categories the
Main list of AIR's & an Extended Merit List to be used by some
allied institutes like the IISER's, IIST, Shipping Institute...etc..
As per the prevailing definitions a student even in the EML is a "JEE
Qualified" student...
Until last year the number of students placed in the EML used to be
slightly more than the total seats put together in these allied
institutes say aroud 1500 or so. Hence the number of EML students was
abt 2000+. There were no ranks given for the EML category...
On 25 May this time JEE website had the main AIR to be shown for the
entered JEE registration number of a student and is he/she is placed in
EML then it showed only EML as his/her result.
In Pune a significantly higher number of EML's were observed till
26-May-2009. This made me & Mr. M. Prakash (an eminent educationist
& a fundoooo maths teacher) wonder how come Pune suddenly is having
abt 200+(abt 10% of the total share) EML students this year. Yesterday
we tried to research on this and we saw a new link on the official JEE
website which gives the EML rank also & it says that the EML list
this time is 6 times as long as the common merit list (10035 this
time). A student of M. Prakash Academy bagged 26 rank in EML while the
last one is some 43000+...In my opinion an EML of such a low rank is
perhaps of no use. It just gives the students, parents, community a
false impression that this student is a "JEE Qualified" student... This
could be a further boon to the coaching industry.
Some questions we have in our minds are:-
Why this EML rank link was not existing (at least prominently) on the first day of the JEE results?
Will a student whose rank is EML40000+ benefit anything from this rank?
It surely benefits the commercial coaching classes in the country as
everyone has big numbers of selections to advertise for them ( I smell
something fishy here ??!!!)
This email is just to sound my personal views & to create
awareness of somethings happening with the IIT/JEE system but are not
very publicly talked/discussed.
Please circulate this further if you agree to even a little extent...

Hundreds of thousands of students aspiring to get into the
prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will now be
answering the Common Admission Test (CAT) online from this year onwards. The
CAT, scores in which decide admission to the IIMs located in Ahmedabad,
Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong, will now
be a Computer Based Test (CBT), a statement issued by IIM-Bangalore
said on Monday. The CAT scores not only determine admission into
the IIMs, but also to several other reputed management institutes.
According to the statement, the test will be conducted in a window of
about 10 days at the end of the year. The institutes claim that
the computer based CAT will be candidate-friendly, flexible in the
selection of test date, ease registration process, provide better
physical environment and test experience, and enhanced security in
terms of biometric identification of candidates and video monitoring. Coaching centres worried But experts from training and coaching centres are worried about how this may affect the students' preparation. "The
content of the exam is not likely to be much different. Still, the fact
that it will be on the computer will affect the preparation of
students," Shiva Kumar of Career Launcher told IANS. According
to Kumar, students will have to prepare differently. "It is imperative
that they put in more effort to take the test and practice papers
online to make themselves comfortable with the CBT format." Too many candidates While
about 95,000 candidates took the CAT in 2003, the number rose to about
250,000 in 2008, indicating a whopping 163 per cent rise. According
to the IIMs, this has resulted in severe strain on the administrative
system of the institutes to conduct the CAT in its existing format. "This year the number of MBA aspirants taking the test is likely to soar further, given that it's recession time," Kumar said. IIMs
have been conducting CAT in paper-and-pencil format for the last 33
years. Ninety percent of those who appear for the CAT are estimated to
be proficient in working on computers. "But they mostly use it
for e-mailing or browsing the internet. Taking the test is a different
thing altogether. Reading the comprehension portions or questions on
screen and working out solutions will be entirely new to many," Kumar
explained. The coaching centers are also troubled that the format of questions is still unclear. "Questions could appear one by one or all at once - this is unclear still," said an official of the Aakash Institutes. "I
am okay with this. My only concern is that with the CBT where will
students do the paperwork? What about the extra sheets required for
calculations?" asked Rahul Khanna, a banker, who will take the CAT this
year. Students will have to wait for clarifications as details
about the computerised CAT will be available along with the CAT
advertisement that will be released later this summer, the
IIM-Bangalore statement said.
